Do You Know the Fertilizer Rules in Your Florida Neighborhood?

If you use fertilizer on your lawn, you're not alone but you may be surprised to learn that most Floridians don’t know if local fertilizer rules apply to them.
A recent survey conducted by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) showed that over 60% of Florida residents who use fertilizer are unsure whether their area has local ordinances. That means many homeowners could be unintentionally violating environmental rules without even realizing it.
🌿 Why It Matters
Local fertilizer restrictions are often in place to protect our water sources, especially during Florida’s rainy season. Runoff from excess fertilizer can lead to harmful algae blooms, water pollution, and damage to our ecosystems — particularly along the Gulf Coast.
In Pasco County and surrounding areas, different municipalities may have different rules about:
- When you can apply fertilizer
- How much you can use
- What type of fertilizer is allowed
🧪 What Most Homeowners Are Missing
The UF/IFAS study also found:
- Most people guess how much fertilizer to use based on the label or a landscaper’s recommendation.
- Nearly 2 out of 3 had not tested their soil in the last year.
- 75% have never visited their local UF/IFAS Extension Office, which offers free advice and helpful resources.
📌 What You Can Do Right Now
- Check with your local government to see if there are fertilizer rules in place.
- Visit the Pasco County Extension Office or explore UF/IFAS’s free resources online.
- Test your soil before applying fertilizer. You might be using more than you need!
- Talk to your landscaper about eco-friendly lawn care options.
🏠 Why This Matters for Homeowners & Sellers
As a Realtor, I’ve seen how a healthy, well-maintained lawn can boost a home’s value and curb appeal. But it’s equally important to care for our environment and stay informed about local regulations.
By following local fertilizer guidelines, you’re not only protecting Florida’s natural beauty you’re also setting your home up for success if you ever decide to sell.
